Camera clubs are one of the most effective ways to improve your photography. You get honest feedback on your work, access to experienced photographers, and regular reasons to actually go out and shoot. This page covers what to expect if you have never been to one before.
Most clubs meet weekly or fortnightly, usually on a weekday evening. A typical night might include one or more of the following:
The format varies a lot between clubs. Some are very competition-focused, others are more relaxed and social. Most clubs are happy for you to visit as a guest before joining.
Whatever you have. Most clubs have members using everything from smartphones to full-frame mirrorless cameras. You do not need expensive gear to join or compete. Subject, composition, and light matter far more than camera brand.
Club competitions typically run in two categories: prints (physical photographs, usually mounted) and projected digital images, submitted as JPEG files and shown on a screen. Images are judged by an external judge who scores each one and gives verbal feedback. Competitions are split by experience level at many clubs, so beginners are not competing directly against seasoned members.

Most clubs charge an annual membership fee, typically between $50 and $150 per year depending on the club and location. Some also charge a small fee per meeting. Many clubs offer a free guest visit or a trial period. Check the individual club's website for current fees.
The Photographic Society of America (PSA) is the main national body for camera clubs in the US. Many established clubs are PSA-affiliated, which allows them to enter inter-club competitions and members to work towards PSA distinctions. See our awards and distinctions page for more detail.
